Do-it-Yourself Wedding Makeup

wedding makeup

In preparation for my upcoming engagement shoot, I did some research on makeup that photographs well. If you’re not a makeup guru, doing your own makeup (for photos that will be around for a lifetime) can be a daunting task. I’ve only recently developed an real interest in makeup, for which my mother is so pleased, but I feel totally behind the curve on perfecting the smokey eye and other beauty trends.  Below is a compilation of the best tips and tricks that I’ve found, the best rated products, and some seriously helpful YouTube tutorials.

Tips and Tricks:

  • You hopefully already know the importance of SPF in your daily beauty routine, but I’m going to tell you to forget all that, just this once. SPF in your foundation and primers can leave you looking shiny in photographs, so select a primer and foundation without SPF for your engagement photos or big day. If you absolutely require SPF, test out some primers with SPF before the big day by photographing yourself under different types of lighting.
  • Your everyday makeup will likely not be enough. Photographs can leave just about any one looking washed out without a decent amount of product. So for your big day, think darker eyes, bolder lip color, and a bit more blush than usual. If the thought of caking on the makeup scares you, check out some expert YouTube tutorials below for foolproof application methods.
  • Use you right concealer for different areas of your face. Check out this comprehensive concealer guide from Lauren Conrad for everything you need to know.
  • Use a setting powder or spray to extend the life of your makeup. Many brands are coming up with makeup setting products these days, so you may have to test a few to see which one you like best. See our recommendations below for our favorite products.
  • Start a beauty regime early and try to follow it strictly to get your skin in tip-top shape. Keeping your skin type in mind, find a moisturizer, cleanser, toner, and mask that works for you. You might also consider getting regular facials. You never know how your skin might react to a facial, so you’ll want to do a test run a few months in advance and get into a regular habit of getting them until the wedding. This also means drinking lots of water, which will also benefit your metabolism. Double duty!

Best YouTube Tutorials:

  • My personal favorite is Jen of “From Head to Toe.” The girl always looks stunning and has some great tips I had never heard before. Check out her Bridal Wedding Makeup Tutorial and her million other helpful videos.
  • I could listen to Lauren from LaurenBeautyy talk all day. It doesn’t hurt that she has great product recommendations and covers all areas of the bridal beauty look in one video. Also, can we talk about how easily she puts on those falsies?
  • I love Nitraa B’s video because she’s a fellow bride-to-be, and she manages to bring color into the wedding day look without looking crazy.
  • Okay, maybe I’ve got a thing for accents, but Lisa Gregory’s romantic bridal makeup tutorial is easy to follow and she does a great job of contouring. Seriously, it’s amazing.
  • Noticing a trend here? Makeup artists love their Urban Decay Naked Palette. Sona Gasparian is no exception. She also uses a facial serum with 24K gold in it. How could you not feel like a million bucks?

Here’s to looking beautiful on your big day! Let us know what your favorite wedding makeup tips and products are in the comments! Check back next week for the last installment of our Bridal Beauty Guide.

The Friday Report

Wait, it’s Friday already??? We apologize for no Wednesday Wish List this week, the past few days (weeks) have taken us VOF girls by storm. I’ve been exploring working in Denver and C has been wedding planning at lightning speed (making me feel like I’m falling behind)! Without further ado, here are some places on the interweb that have caught our eye this week.

Sometime you just need to lighten the mood. Thankfully, puppies and kittens usually do the trick.

I love this list about girlfriends, everyone needs a great friend (shout out to C and our “Tias”!).

I think cell phone companies had a hand in create this awesome/terrible app.

This real life (and beautiful) wedding just rekindles our Friday Night Lights obsession.

Who doesn’t want man-candy (read: ryan gosling) dangling from their earlobes?

A reminder from some little ones to keep things light.

For those of us who had an awkward year (or ten), we love this tumblr project.

The Friday Report

Hello loves! So ^that^ happened this weekend! My other half of VOF, the beautiful and glowing C, got engaged in Dallas! We know we promised a detailed weekend guide to Dallas (which is still on it’s way!), but we’ve been totally consumed with wedding details for the past few days. (I’ve been engaged for eight months now and I swear C has got more planning done in the past six days.) If you’re looking for more wedding-related posts, get ready because wedding planning is now in full swing at VOF headquarters.

To hold you over until we share our own engagement stories, go ahead and read the MOST AMAZING PROPOSAL OF ALL TIME. Grab the tissues, girls.

We were so excited to see this 101 things to do in 1001 days list from Design Darling. Stay tuned for our own list, and share yours with us in the comments! We’ll feature our favorite here on VOF.

We’re making a mental note to remember these genius parenting tactics in 10 years.

VOF’s Top Birchbox Picks

VOF's Top Birchbox Picks
Birchbox has renewed our adventurous side when it comes to beauty. Before Birchbox, I had my staple products from which I never EVER swayed. Occasionally a new lip gloss might make it into the mix, but my beauty routine had become boring. Enter Birchbox’s monthly subscription service that delivers top-tier beauty products to your door, most of which you won’t be able to find at your average department store. So for those of us who live in B.F.E. our monthly treat has become an essential way of staying on top of beauty trends, and has gotten us more excited about primer than any one girl should ever be. Without further ado, we present VOF’s top Birchbox picks that have landed themselves a permanent gig in our beauty routine:
1. Jouer’s Matte Moisture Tint: Long gone are the days that us oily-skinned gals swear off moisturizer. Jouer’s Matte Moisture Tint pulls double duty and acts as moisturizer and foundation (did we mention it contains SPF also???) freeing up your time to soak up some precious summer sunshine.
2. Amika Nourishing Hair Mask: A poor color job left my ends in dire condition a few months ago, so I was on the prowl for a hair mask that would redeem my fried locks back to their satin-y, soft condition. Enter Amika’s hair mask. It did the job perfectly, so well that I use it weekly to maintain that shampoo-commercial-worthy shine.3. Oscar Blandi Pronto Texture & Volume Spray: This is hands down my favorite product that Birchbox has introduced into my life. Just a few sprays and my normally fine, flat hair has body ALL DAY LONG. I repeat, ALL. DAY. Body and texture was a completely foreign concept to my hair just months ago, but I’ve now seen the light.4. Supergoop! ‘Daily Correct’ CC Cream: Color Correcting cream does one millions things at once. Okay, maybe just a dozen things (primer, SPF, foundation, etc.), but CC cream basically covers your entire skin routine which, paired with mascara, is the perfect beauty regimine for summer.

5. theBalm’s Hot Mama Highlighting Powder Eyeshadow and Blush: I’ve even gotten my mom addicted to this one (although, to be fair, she’s always way ahead of me on the beauty curve). The gold shimmer brings a hint of glam not offered with your everyday blush, but is subtle enough to be worn anywhere. Not to mention, the color looks great on all skin types.

6. Benefit Cosmetics Stay Flawless 15-hour Primer: Those ladies who work long days with hectic schedules rarely have time to refresh make-up during the day. This product was made for them, but there’s nothing stopping the rest of us lazy gals from using it too!

7. Youngblood Anti-Shine Mattifier: Okay, I had to throw in another for my oily complected gals. I discovered this miracle-worker when I was stressing over how to stay shine-free during Mike and I’s engagement shoot. In the summer. In the South. Do you need more proof?

8. Dr. Jart+ Black Label Detox BB Beauty Balm: This list would not be complete without a beauty balm. Who can say no to a purifying face cream that hides blemishes and evens out skin tone?

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

As we look forward to Friday, Steve and I are getting excited about the Dodger’s game we are going to tomorrow night. I will be the first to admit that I HATE baseball, but who can resist a fun evening with friends and beer.

Now, I have no intention of wearing typical “baseball fan” attire tomorrow. Why not make it a little funky and glam it up? I love this mix of patterns and styles, combining feminine and girly with a classic graphic tee. And of course, I could never forget my beauty accessories, especially my Clinique Chubby Stick! I swear by these colorful little lippers. Trust me, try them. I guarantee you’ll love them as much as me!
